Junior Environmental Engineer/Scientist - Environmental Group

Safetech Environmental Limited (Safetech) is looking for a Junior Environmental Engineer/Scientist to join its Environmental Department. This position opening is an introductory role to the environmental engineering industry. The applicant will have an opportunity to manage projects relating to the contamination of soil/water throughout Ontario. The successful applicant will be responsible for all tasks related to completing these projects from planning the field work to writing the final technical reports. Our goal is to develop the successful applicant’s skills and knowledge of the industry so that they may eventually progress into a Project Manager role.

Responsibilities:

  • Reporting to the Senior Environmental Engineer, the Engineer-in-Training (EIT) and/or Environmental Technician is required to carry out field work and reporting for the following types of projects:

    • Phase I/One and Phase II/Two Environmental Site Assessments (ESAs)

    • Hydrogeological Assessments

    • Emergency Fuel Spill Response and Remediations

    • Other (drinking water sampling, disposal sampling, etc)

  • Required to adapt to a fast pace environment and ensure field work and reporting is completed in accordance with training and regulations mentored by the Senior Project Manager/Senior Environmental Engineer.

  • Expected to learn and execute environmental sampling protocols, Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) procedures, technical report writing and chemical analysis interpretation.

  • Hours: The EIT will be expected to work a minimum of 40 hours a week

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Strong English technical writing and communication skills;

  • Ability to multi-task, work independently and collaboratively within department;

  • Willingness to travel and perform field work outdoors in sometimes adverse weather conditions;

  • Examples of field work include and are not limited to:

    • Soil/water collection and sampling

    • Supervision of contractors (excavating, drilling, hydro-vaccuming, etc)

    • Operation and maintenance of high precision technical equipment to collect field data

    • Generate technical drawings

  • Technical writing of environmental documents utilized by financial institutions, property/company owners, industry managers, City/Region representatives and the Ministry of Environment Conservation and Parks (MECP);

  • Support after hour emergency fuel spill responses, which includes site work and reporting;

  • Keep up to date with applicable regulations: O.Reg 153/04 (as amended), O.Reg 406/19, O.Reg 347, O.Reg 558/00 and Canadian Standards Association (CSA) for which training will be provided during orientation;

  • Take part in extracurricular activities sponsored by the company as well as industry events related to environmental engineering; and,

  • Provide manager with weekly documentation of resources used, including time sheets and expenses.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • EIT – 4 year Engineering Degree (B.A.Sc., B.Eng.) in a related discipline (Environmental, Chemical, etc.);

  • Eligibility and willingness to obtain P.Eng/P.Geo designation considered an asset.

  • One (1) year experience would be considered an asset.

SKILL REQUIREMENTS

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Adobe Acrobat;

  • Experience using AutoCAD preferred

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills;

  • Willingness to learn and adapt to fast paced environment;

  • Good technical competency in proper operation and use of various types of testing equipment;

  • Working knowledge of various sampling methodologies and pertinent Environmental and Health & Safety regulations, standards and guidelines;

  • Good relationship building skills for fostering and maintaining cooperative working relationships with colleagues, contractors, and clients;

  • Good time management, multi-tasking and organizational skills necessary to plan and run a complicated project or multiple projects concurrently; and,

  • Good initiative and self-motivation necessary to make recommendations, take action, and work with little direction.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $20 to $22 per hour

Must have a vehicle and valid driver’s license.

·       Must have working vehicle. If vehicle is not operational, it is the employee’s responsibility to complete travel for required field work

·       Must work from office everyday for the initial 3 months of employment for training purposes.
