The Hidden Dangers Behind Home Renovations
Thanks to Home & Garden Television (HGTV) and social media, Do It Yourself (DIY) renovations have become more popular than ever.
Watching someone tear down walls or rip up old flooring can make renovation projects look exciting and simple. However, what many people do not realize is that older homes may contain a hidden hazard behind those walls and beneath those floors: asbestos.
For decades, asbestos was widely used in construction materials because of its durability, fire resistance, and insulating properties. It could be found in materials such as pipe insulation, drywall compound, vinyl floor tiles, and textured ceilings. Because of how versatile it was, asbestos was even used in products people would never expect, including certain toys in the past.
While asbestos-containing materials may seem harmless when left undisturbed, renovation and demolition activities can release dangerous microscopic fibres into the air. Once inhaled, these fibres may lead to serious health risks years after exposure.
Social media often highlights the transformation process, but rarely shows the inspections and safety precautions that should happen before demolition begins. Before starting renovations in older buildings, proper asbestos testing is an important step in helping keep homeowners, workers, and occupants safe.
