Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral that was historically widely used in building construction due to its thermal properties, electrical resistance and ability to withstand chemical breakdown.
Asbestos can become a health threat when airborne; inhaling it can lead to asbestosis, lung and other cancers. You need to be concerned about the identification and management of asbestos when assessing building condition or altering your current space during maintenance, renovation, or demolition activities.
Within the construction industry, exposure to asbestos and the resulting illnesses have not been restricted to the manufacturing sector. Some of the most hazardous activities with asbestos occur on construction projects. Workers carrying out renovations, demolition and other construction activities on structures built with asbestos-containing materials have potentially been exposed to asbestos. Over-exposure has been most common in trades, such as plumbing, insulation and fireproofing. Construction employers have a duty to protect their workers from asbestos exposure. In conjunction with the above SEL offers four occupational health and safety training courses specific to asbestos – containing materials. These courses have been designed to address the needs of maintenance personnel, health and safety managers, construction managers, building managers and those interested in conducting Type 1, 2, and 3 abatement. Please refer to our training section for further information.

Ontario Regulation 278/05 “Designated Substance - Asbestos on Construction Projects and in Buildings and Repair Operations” is the governing regulation in Ontario for building owners, building managers, construction managers, general contractors, engineers and maintenance personnel who are required to manage or may come in contact with asbestos as part of their work activities. It has specific requirements for employer and building owners such as the identification of friable asbestos materials, management programs, training of workers and other requirements. This includes classifying asbestos abatement work as Type 1, Type 2, or Type 3 activity. SEL can assist with ensuring your facility is in compliance with this regulation.
